AN IVORY-GROUND DAOIST PRIEST'S ROBE
19TH CENTURY
The robe is decorated to the shoulders with cockerel and hare medallions, above a pavilion flanked by confronting dragons. It is further decorated with crane roundels, Eight Daoist Trigrams, bagua, the attributes of the Eight Immortals, and seal script characters, all above cranes and foaming waves.

Property from a Private American Collection, gifted by Mme Ganna Walska (1887-1984) to the vendor in 1974.

Lot Essay

Ganna Walska was a Polish opera singer and garden enthusiast who emigrated to America and married six times. In 1926 she purchased the Duchess of Marlborough's Faberge egg offered by Consuelo Vanderbilt at a charity auction. It was later acquired by Malcolm Forbes as the first Easter egg in his Faberge egg collection.
