Lot Essay

Rolex reference 5500 was launched in 1957 and could carry various names on the dial ranging from Air King to Explorer to Metropolitan (the present watch) and even Everest. Sometimes the names were replaced and personalized for companies. They could, for example, read Coca Cola, Domino’s Pizza (see lot 265) or Winn Dixie. The case of reference 5500 was slightly smaller than that of later Explorer sister reference 1016.
