Lot Essay

With Rolex blank Guarantee, Rolex Geneva Swimpruf Oyster tag, Rolex Oyster Guaranteed 660 ft./200 meters under water anchor, Submariner Rolex brochure and presentation box.

In production for one year only, 1958, reference 5510 is one of the rarest, perhaps the rarest "big crown" Submariner, and among the most sought after Rolex sports watches. The combination of the very large 8 mm. crown and the lack of crown guards make it one of the most immediately recognizable Submariner models.

The present reference 5510 is a most appealing example of this rare reference, distinguished by its overall very original condition, including the correct "Brevet" crown, gilt hands and the bezel with small red triangle and minute markers between 1 and 15.

The presence of the period accessories further enhance the collectability of this “James Bond big crown” Submariner.
In the movies Dr. No and Goldfinger, Sean Connery alias James Bond is wearing a Rolex Submariner. Since then, the early Submariner models without crown guard such as the present reference 5510 as well as references 6200 and 6538 (see the following lot and lot 273 in this auction) and others are also known as the "James Bond" models.
