Lot Essay
This pattern of table was widely used by David Hicks (d.1998), the designer/interior decorator renowned for combining antique and modern furnishings and for his use of bold colours. From 1954 he cultivated a client list mixing aristocracy, media and fashion, including Lord Brabourne, Lord Mountbatten and he was employed to decorate Prince Charles's private apartment in Buckingham Palace, Mrs. Conde Nast and Mrs, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. He also designed carpets and film sets and was a master of, and indeed invented the term, `tablescape', the arrangement of objects of similar colour, texture and character as landscapes on a flat surface.
