Lot Essay

This pair of lamps, attributed to the work of lamp-manufacturer and oil warehouseman James Smethurst of 138 New Bond Street, is almost identical to a stamped pair in a private collection. It is not known who drafted Smethurst's design work, but he is recorded in 1802 as having registered a patent (no. 2654) for 'certain improvements applicable to lamps and reflectors' giving an address as St.Margaret's Hill, Southwark (Leeds, Temple Newsam, Country House Lighting, 1992, p. 139.).
