Lot Essay

The anchor engraved on the matrix of the present seal suggests that it could have belonged to Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of Russia (1850-1908), the fourth son of Emperor Alexander II, and the General Admiral of the Russian naval forces between 1883-1905.

A comparable seal with a purpurine handle was sold Sotheby’s, Geneva, 14 May 1987, lot 372.
