Josse Leriche rejoint la manufacture de Porcelaine de Sèvres le 1er juin 1757, où il est en charge de l’atelier de sculpture, produisant de nombreux modèles au cours des décennies suivantes. Les bustes ici présents sont issus d’une série des quatre saisons. Une autre paire de bustes en marbre, représentant l’été et l’hiver, vendue à Bonhams, Londres, le 7 juillet 2010, lot 108, était signée et datée respectivement 1778 et 1780. Notre buste de l’été est similaire à celui vendu chez Bonhams, ce qui suggère que les saisons étaient un sujet populaire pour Leriche, qui a probablement réalisé plusieurs fois un même modèle dans son atelier.
Josse Leriche joined the Sèvres porcelain factory on 1 June 1757, where he was in charge of the sculpture workshop, and over the following decades produced numerous models for them. The present busts are two from a series of four seasons. Another pair of marble busts, emblematic of summer and winter, that sold at Bonhams, London, 7 July 2010, lot 108, were signed and dated 1778 and 1780, respectively. The present bust of summer is the same model as the Bonhams bust, which suggests that the seasons were a popular subject matter for Leriche, who probably re-used stock models in his workshop.
