NOTE:
The recipient of the painting is Chen Jianmin (1919-1990), known as the father of Sichuan cuisine in Japan. Born in Sichuan, Chen worked as Zhang Daqian’s personal chef until he later emigrated to Japan in 1952 and founded Shisen Hanten in Tokyo. A selection of paintings from the collection was sold in our saleroom in Spring 2008 (Fine Chinese Modern Paintings, Lots 885 – 891).
