PROPERTY FORMERLY FROM THE COLLECTION OF PROFESSOR DANIEL TE-YEN LEEProfessor Daniel Te-Yen Lee (1923-2001) was the English translator at the Nanjing headquarters of the United States Military Advisory Group. In the late 1940s, Huhan, his friend who was a collector of Chinese paintings, was moving out of China and sold several of the larger paintings from his collection to Lee, including Landscape in the Style of Shitao. Lee moved to the United States with his family and worked as a host of a Chinese television programme. In 1972, Lee conducted an interview with Zhang Daqian at his studio, Huanbi An (Wicker Hut). Through this occasion, Lee was able to show a photograph of Landscape in the Style of Shitao to Zhang, to which the artist pleasantly recalled painting it for Huhan. According to Zhang Daqian in the interview, this painting was the largest he ever painted at the time.
