Réservées aux chefs et guerriers de haut rang, ces massues en os de baleine se distinguent par un pommeau sculpté d’une figure de tiki. La perforation à la base du manche était destinée à recevoir une dragonne. La forme générale de la massue figure une silhouette anthropomorphe stylisée. Utilisée en combat rapproché, la lame de ce type de massue était redoutable. Les chefs porteurs d’une kotiate paraoa lançaient habituellement un duel à leur adversaire (in Moko Mead, 1984). Très belle ancienneté. Voir Christie’s (10 mai 2012, lot 8) pour une massue comparable provenant de la collection d’Ernst Beyeler.
