FIRST EDITION, with 4-page publisher's advertisement dated March 1, 1850 bound in at front. In spite of the controversial subject matter, The Scarlet Letter was an immediate success. 2,500 copies were sold in its first week of publication, lifting Hawthorne out of literary obscurity.
