An ivory brise fan
lacquered in three colours of gold with hiramakie, kirigane and takamakie with cranes over a stormy sea with the sun preparing to set in the distance and an inscription above, the verso with figures, their faces and shoes of applied ivory, the shoes stained green, with a frieze of birds above - 8in. (19cm.), Japanese late 19th century (two faces missing, one stick repaired)

Lot Essay

The Japanese inscription reads: K-eiri-e su-he(which can be read as pi)-na-ru - probably the owner's name phonetically, possibly Carey Aspinall
