At the height of his career, in 1883, De Mango moved to Istanbul, where he lived for nearly 50 years. The artist, like Fausto Zonaro, was fascinated by the culture, the colours and the light of the city on the Bosphorus.
The present composition captures a glimpse of everyday life in the area close to Galata Tower, with fishermen relaxing on the bank of the Bosphorus.
In the background, on the left, the Yeni Cami (New Mosque) and Suleymaniye Mosque, are immediately recognizable.
