Edward Adrian Wilson was part of two British expeditions to Antarctica, the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) and the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), both led by Robert Falcon Scott.
In this book, Wilson records a number of the guiding principles in his life as well as recalling the day of his engagement to Oriana Souper. The second entry includes a verse by Knox Little, 'One should be kind - for kind words mean a kind heart, & a kind heart means self-discipline - faithful prayer, a stern hand against wrong - a gentleness with weakness, a giving up once & for all of sharp & cruel criticism - so easy - so self pleasing - but so unbecoming. The world will then be cleaner & our own souls will be nearer to God.'
