REAGAN, Nancy (1921-2016). I Love You Ronnie. The Letters of Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan. New York: Random House, 2000. Illustrated. Specially bound in half brown morocco, marbled boards, spine gilt-lettered, edges gilt.
FIRST EDITION. Nancy and Ronnie shared a legendary love for one another. Their friend Charlton Heston proclaimed they had “probably the greatest love affair in the history of the American Presidency. You can’t be around them for half an hour and not recognize the absolutely genuine total concern each has for the other” (People magazine, Vol.45, No.6, 1996). Of their relationship, Nancy famously and frequently remarked, “my life didn’t really begin until I met Ronnie.” She frets: “I wasn’t as good at putting my feelings into words. Writing came so naturally to Ronnie…I wish I could have written back in the same way” (p.6 in the present edition). She calls Ronald’s letters “the most precious thing of all…they recall happy times, and, above all, they preserve the voice of the Ronnie I love” (p.5,7). Of Nancy, Ronnie writes: “I just want to start each day by opening my eyes and seeing you and end each day seeing you before I close them. In between times, I’ll just look in my heart. You are always there” (p.112).
