Lot Essay

This head was made by John Somerville.

The Golden Idol of Fertility was inspired by Inca and Pre-Columbian art and played a significant role in the dramatic opening sequence of the first Indiana Jones film where Jones made his way through a South
American jungle braving ...the betrayal of his guides, the poison-tipped spears of native warriors, and the deadly booby traps of an ancient temple to pluck his prize: the Golden Idol of Fertility...When Spielberg sketched an image of his idol he scribbled the note: "statue seems to be watching and cursing his every step".. and every step Jones took in the temple was fraught with danger and had to be plotted to outwit the ancient keepers of the idol and their numerous defensive traps. Despite Jones' precautions he manages to trigger a crushing bolder which rolls down a chut almost crushing him in the memorable opening moment.
