Lot Essay

The attribution to Nast or Darte Frères is based on a stylistic comparison of marked work by these two preeminent Paris factories, both of which are known for the high quality of their modeling and decoration. The molded acanthus leaf tips, lotus and the juxtaposition of burnished and matte gold is particularly reminiscent of the work of the Nast Brothers. For a Nast vase in the collection of the museum at Sèvres - Cité de la Céramique with very similar modeling, the incurved handles with the head of a ram rather than the more unusual panther found on the present vase clock, the painted decoration by Darte, see Régine de Plinval de Guillebon, Faïence et Porcelain de Paris XVIIIe-XIXe Siècles, Paris, 1995, pp. 14-15, color illus.
