King Friedrich August II’s copy of the first collected edition of the first work to treat natural history in emblematic form.
4 parts in one volume, 4° (195 x 147mm). Four engraved titles, 400 circular emblems in the text. Emblem 77 in part I with light hand-colouring; emblems 8 and 10 in part IV tipped in. (Lower margin of first title repaired, preliminary leaves of part I bound with part IV.) Contemporary vellum, spine titled in manuscript, sides ruled in blind (lacking front free endpaper, vellum soiled). Provenance: J.Fr.L. Reupsch of Helmstadt (1727-1788; monogram on title, signature on first leaf) – Dr J.M.W. Baumann (entomological engraved bookplate; some underlining, perhaps in his hand) – Friedrich August II, King of Saxony (1797-1854; bookplate) – Dresden Central Art Library (deaccessioned stamp).

‘Camerarius devoted each of the four centuries of emblems to a different corner of the created world: herbs and trees; quadrupeds; birds and flying insects; sea creatures. The completed design surveys the four orders of created things, each book confining itself to a single province.' (Manning, The Emblem, p. 120).
