Lot Essay

A related 'millefleurs' prayer mat, dated to mid-18th century, Afghan period, is published in Frank Ames, The Kashmir Shawl and its Indo-French Influence, London, 1997, pl.180, p.311. Another woven mat also inscribed 'Shi Mubarak' (for Mubarak) was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 27 April 1993, lot 260. Another related piece dated to the late 18th century was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 9 October 2015, lot 139 and finally, another shawl from the Nemati collection sold at Drouot, Paris, 11 April 2016, lot 88 (also published in Ames, op.cit., pl.181, p.312).
