This rare and large late 17th or early 18th century “oignon” alarm watch is preserved in unusually fine condition for its age, probably carefully kept in the leather covered case which is quite possibly original and certainly of the same period.
Made by the great Isaac Thuret, the present watch naturally has a highly crafted and beautiful verge movement and very attractive blue Roman dial. It would have been used as a travelling alarm clock by a person of high status.
Isaac Thuret II (c.1630 -1706) is regarded as one of the greatest clockmaker of his time and his activity was intense: the King, the Royal Family, the ministers, the great financiers and members of the nobility were all his clients.
