Lot Essay

First announced in 1748, the German-born engraver, painter and naturalist Franz Michael Regenfuss finally completed his great book on snails, mussels and other shellfish in Copenhagen in 1758, where he was established as engraver at the Danish Royal Court. The handcoloring of the plates is thought be executed by his wife.
