Many of these types of brightly colored faience vessels were ritually damaged before burial, hence the hole in the bottom of the present example. A large number of these vases were found during excavations for the foundation for a hospital in Alexandra in the mid 20th century (A. Caubet and G. Pierrat-Bonnefois, Faïences de l’antiquité. De l’Égypte, p. 185).
