Lot Essay

The design of the present lot is a direct copy of a cartoon used in two carpets woven by Piat Lefebvre et Fils, Tournai in 1809 and published by Sarah B. Sherrill, Carpets and Rugs of Europe and America, New York, 1996, pls.125 & 126, pp.118-119. Tournai is principally known for its production of moquette carpets and was one of the major weaving centers for knotted-pile carpets during the late 18th and early 19th century. The Delescolle and Lefebvre family workshops in Tournai supplied carpets to many of the royal palaces and the aristocracy throughout the Continent, with Napoleon I being one of their most important patrons (Sherrill, op.cit, 1995, p.112).
