A BRONZE MANCHU OFFICIAL'S SEAL
DATED 14TH YEAR OF QIANLONG CORRESPONDING TO 1749 AND OF THE PERIOD
The seal is of square form with a tapering columnar handle. The top and base of the seal are inscribed in Manchu and Chinese with the characters Xingbu Guangdong Qing lisi yin, li bu zao (Seal of the Ministry of Justice of the Guangdong Qing government, made by the Ministry of Rites). One side is incised with the characters Qian zi yiqian babai qishiqi hao (number 1877 of the series) and to the other side with Qianlong shisi nian wuyue ri zao (Made in the 5th month of the 14th year of Qianlong).

Lot Essay

Compare the current seal to an example, also dating to the 5th month of the 14th year of Qianlong in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, accession number EA1970.19, with identical format of inscription but for the Transport Department, number 1884 of the series.
