This plate was probably made as a replacement or additional piece for the service of St Andrew the First Called. The service was originally given to Empress Elizabeth I of Russia (1707-1762) by Augustus III in 1745, on the occasion of the marriage of her nephew and successor, Grand Duke Peter, to Sophie-Auguste of Anhalt-Zerbst, later Empress Catherine the Great.
