Woodcut title within architectural border with classical figures and grotesques, one full-page woodcut, 60 engraved full-page illustrations, woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. (Long wormtrack in inner gutter and/or lower margin, affecting image and text on verso of most leaves, lightly browned throughout, a few light stains, faint waterstain in a few margins.) 19th-century morocco-backed boards (remnants of 2 labels on spine, lightly rubbed, new endpapers).
FIRST PASCHALI ITALIAN EDITION, with the explanatory text printed on plate versos. Besson's work was one of the first French works on machines and mechanical engineering. Giulio Paschali also prepared a Latin edition published by Vincent in the same year. Adams B-839; Brunet I, 830 (stating that the plates of all editions after 1579 were reworked to some degree).
