Lot Essay

The Montevideo Dream

Few watches capture the imagination of collectors more than the stainless steel reference 565. Rare in numbers, elegant in style, and easily wearable, this watch has everything that the modern day watch aficionado desires. The presently offered watch does not fail to disappoint in any regard – an amazing tropical warm patina colored dial, it now has a salmon hue which is aesthetically pleasing with the steel case, the case in crisp unpolished condition and it retains its original finish most notably on its outside case back, and the bracelet adds an extra element, a coveted period stainless steel Gay Frères bracelet likely added to the watch at the time of purchase in 1945.

Fresh to the market, made in 1944, and preserved in exceptional original overall condition, the appeal of the present Calatrava is further enhanced by the retailer's signature Freccero, Patek Philippe's distinguished retailer in Montevideo, Uruguay.

For other examples of the 565 in steel, see Patek Philippe Steel Watches by John Goldberger, p. 166-195.
