Lot Essay

Inspired by Patek Philippe's charismatic Calatrava reference 570 model from the 1930s, a vision of timeless elegance, the present reference 5196 features a platinum case and a highly attractive two-tone silvered dial. Reminiscent of the dials from the period, it combines a satin-finish center combined with applied white gold Breguet numerals. This example also features a Tiffany & Co. stamp, a subtle and welcome intrusion within the subsidiary seconds dial.

Reference 5196 was launched in 2004 and exists in all three gold colors, including platinum. Gold versions are typically fitted with baton numerals dials but all platinum models known were fitted with the sought-after Breguet numerals and silvered dial, such as the present lot. To the best of our knowledge the present watch has never before been offered in public.
