An interesting late-18th-century English sketchbook of trees in England kept by Thomas Frankland. The manuscript title on the album reads: “Characters of Trees / Thos. Frankland.” Many of the subjects are identified, captioned “at Woodend” with date.

4to album (234 x 160 mm). 41 original drawings in brown ink or pencil with manuscript captions (some drawn on other sheets and mounted, one loose, a few mounted engravings); at end are mounted 32 engravings of tree specimens from an instructional manual on drawing trees from 1771. Contemporary half sheep, marbled boards (spine and corners worn). Provenance: Thomas Frankland, possibly Sir Thomas Frankland, 6th Baronet (1750-1831), British landowner and Member of Parliament (signature on front pastedown and presumably his drawings and captions—a few identified as drawn by others).
