First edition of Grew’s second treatise, compring papers he gave to the Royal Society in 1672. Grew was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1672, and at Bishop Wilkins’ suggestion, on 18 April 1672, Grew was named curator of the anatomy of plants to the society.

8vo (181 x 110 mm). 7 engraved folding plates. (Paper flaws on A4 and I5 touching letters, some browning or dampstaining, a few short tears to fold of plates touching image.) Contemporary calf gilt (rebacked, first gathering and free endpaper becoming loose, two small holes on upper cover, scratch on lower cover). Provenance: Thomas James (c.1650-1711) London bookseller and mathematical printer to the King, grandson of Bodley’s first librarian (inscription noting his bequest to Sion College dated 1711); Sion College Library (stamp on verso of title-page accompanied by a deaccession stamp dated 1938).
