First edition of one of the most comprehensive treatises on architecture, which had a wide influence in Italy and northern Europe.

2 volume, folio (335 x 229 mm). 2 engraved titles incorporating a portrait of the author, each book with printed title, 42 full-page woodcut illustrations (3 double-page), and 44 full-page engraved illustrations (5 double-page) ornamental initials and headpieces. (Engraved title with minor marginal repairs to blank corners, vol. 1 X1-X2 with minor worming along inner margin affecting image, some light staining.) 19th century vellum, spines gilt. Provenance: Early ownership inscriptions on title. Folwer 292.

Scamozzi, a student and assistant to Andrea Palladio “’enjoyed and undisputed international reputation and provided a direct link with Palladio for Bernini’s generation’ (Wittkover 1983, 26) and also connected ‘the Palladian tradition to the greater inventions of his pupil Longhena’ (Lewis 1977, 45.” (Millard).
