[LAWRENCE, T.E.] SHAW, George Bernard. Autograph letter signed (“G.B.S.”) to T. E. Lawrence, Conway, North Wales, 12 April 1928. 7 pages, 4to, in pencil, final page repaired.

Shaw's frank and detailed criticism of The Mint.

“As it cannot be published as a work of literary art (except possibly…as pure bawdry) the only thing to be considered is how and where to place it on record and to secure it from destruction.” Shaw suggests depositing a privately printed copy with some appropriate institution, but worries about the shocking or disturbing portions of the book falling victim to a censor’s scissors. He suggests selling “the manuscript to Foyle for the cost of producing and distributing an edition of 20 copies” or publishing a “bowdlerized edition through Cape…You are wobbling between your conceptions of the thing as a verbatim report for the archives and a work of art. I think you had better discard the latter unless you are prepared to rewrite a good deal of it with humour enough to make it bearable and decency enough to make it presentable…” A remarkable, lengthy letter from one great literary artist to another.
