First edition. The Leavenworth Case "may fairly be called the father of the modern detective story. Poe discovered the idea, but Anna Katherine Green gave the story its pattern and garments" (Grolier American 60). Vincent Starretts copy.

Original russet cloth, lettered in black on front cover, gilt-lettered on spine (slightest wear at extremities, generally clean and bright); cloth folding case (joint broken). Provenance: Vincent Starrett (1886-1974), mystery and horror/fantasy author (signature on flyleaf, bookplate). Laid-in: printed portrait of the author, signed by her “Anna Katharine Green Rohlfs.”
