Griffiths suggests that the current work appears to be by the same hand as the painter of the portrait of Margaret Cavenidsh Harley, Duchess of Portland, which appeared in the Tate Gallery's Manners and Morals exhibition of 1987, no. 151, as attributed to Edward Penny. He suggests an attribution to Charles Phillips may also be plausible. (Ibid, p.43.)
