This drawing, undoubtedly made as an independent work, combines an accurate depiction of Salers cattle with a dramatic rendering of the Auvergne mountains – a subject treated more often by the artist, for instance in a painting in the R. W. Norton Art Gallery, Shreveport, Louisiana (R. Shriver, Rosa Bonheur: With a Checklist of Works in American Collections, Phildelphia, 1982, p. 53, ill.; see also the print after Bonheur in J.
