GEORGE HARRISON
A January 1967 letter to Arthur Unger, five pages handwritten, signed Love, George, with original mailing envelope and typed translation. George Harrison discusses Karma and Rebirth, and thanks his friend for the books sent to the band, ...I distributed the books to J. P. R., and I kept one of the Leary prayer books myself, as it is presented so beautifully... He goes on to discuss Timothy Leary, That reminds me - what does Leary suggest after dropping out? don't remember his instructions but are we meant to rot? George Harrison also tells Mr. Unger, ...we are working on a new album and single with no particular release date in mind which should give us an opportunity of doing the best tracks to date. It is such a good feeling knowing that we do or don't do whatever we please musically and its just trying to get the urge to do it now. referring to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, recognized as the band's conceptual masterpiece. Accompanied by a typed translation of the letter.
Together with a cassette of Arthur Unger interviewing George Harrison in the late 1960s on the subject of meditation, and a twenty-six page typed translation of the exchange. The following excerpts out of sequence:
UNGER: George, is meditation a substitute for something else?
GEORGE: Yes and no. Like, for us, it's a substitute for acid, for LSD. UNGER: Could you give me an example of a specific mantra?
GEORGE: No. I couldn't. I mean, I could tell you my mantra, but there is no point, you see, because the whole thing of the mantra is...the mantra is most effective at the subtlest level. You see what I mean? If I speak the mantra out loud, then it's bringing it to the surface.
