THE BEATLES
A collection of twelve cassette tapes recorded by Arthur Unger with The Beatles during their 1965-1966 tours, with the exception of one; varying lengths of conversation, accompanied by eight black and white photographs of Arthur Unger with the band, and typed transcripts of the interviews (unedited and uncorrected.)
TAPE I: JOHN LENNON
John discusses the recent controversy surrounding his statements regarding religion, I didn't think of it as any particular kind of material. It was just some article about me when it was being done. You know, sort of about me and London, England really. You know, it's just...I don't think about it anymore.
TAPE 2: JOHN LENNON, RINGO STARR, GEORGE HARRISON, PAUL McCARTNEY
John discusses his thoughts on fellow artist Bob Dylan as a performer/author, and Dylan's recent concert at Albert Hall. He also describes his work as a writer and artist. Ringo talks about his personal lack of controversy, and the changing mix of fans attending their shows. George explains Japanese music and the band's feelings with regard to working with other musicians. Paul talks about the involvement of young people in politics, and discusses the difference between British and American teenagers.
TAPE 3: GEORGE HARRISON
Arthur Unger asks George to describe his activities in his spare time on tour (sleeping, Indian Music), and views on modern religion, India, reincarnation and Lenny Bruce's "Religion Incorporated."
TAPE 5: GEORGE HARRISON
George is asked when he realized he was a "phenomenan" and responds I must admit I still haven't felt as big as we are and we never actually go out there and try to get them to scream; So over the last two years nobody's heard us on stage, so consequently our performances have deteriorated to such an extent now that, you know, really our stage show is terrible.
TAPE 6: Arthur Unger remembers a plane trip home from San Francisco with The Beatles, the last time he was with the band. On this trip John signed the famous issue of DATEBOOK and explained that the "C" stands for Christ and after giving his son the initials "JC", he's probably going to have to live with it for a long time.
TAPE 7: RINGO STARR, PAUL McCARTNEY, GEORGE HARRISON, JOHN LENNON
Ringo talks about his son and wishes for his future; Paul talks extensively about his relationship with Jane Asher, her career as an actress, and how he hid her from the public. George discusses the difficulty of being in New York, and being unable to move about freely. John talks about London and New York, and about the changing attitude of his fans. TAPE 8: GEORGE HARRISON
George discusses transcendental meditation and the critic's interpretation of the song, repeating and explaining the lyrics; as well as his experience with LSD, which ...led me to look for something higher.
TAPE 10: ARTHUR UNGER
The publisher describes how his relationship with The Beatles began, and the history of the magazine DATEBOOK.
TAPE 12: JOHN LENNON, PAUL McCARTNEY, GEORGE HARRISON
The three Beatles comment on DATEBOOK Magazine.
TAPE 13: RINGO STARR
A 1989 interview in which Ringo discusses "Shining Time Station," and a subsequent meeting between the former Beatle and Arthur Unger. The two reminisce about the band in the 1960s, the fact that Brian Epstein never arranged for them to have a percentage of DATEBOOK, and Ringo's plans for the future.
