SID VICIOUS
A 1978 court stenographer's sign-in notebook, created following the October 13 New York hearing where John Simon Ritchie of the legendary Sex Pistols was formally charged with the murder of girlfriend Nancy Spungen. On November 21 Virgin Records posted bail, with the monitoring book a condition of the court's release. Handwritten on the cover SID VICIOUS and JOHN S. RITCHIE SIGN-IN-BOOK AKA SID VICIOUS; stapled to the inside cover (over similar handwritten instructions with a different time on the cover itself) a piece of paper stating in part When Sid Vicious is released - conditions of bail - he will sign in before 1500 hours Mon-Wed and Friday Non appearance to be reported immediately. The first, and only page of the book used, features four columns noting date, name, time and the Detective on duty; under the name column, Sid signs his birth name 16 times, until December 8 when Bail revoked by Judge Ellerin Remanded to jail, when he was sent to Riker's Island Prison after a December 7 nightclub altercation with Patti Smith's brother. The book shows that on 1/16/79 he could have been released on $60,000 bail (no one would post the money), 1/23/79 Still on Riker's Island, and 2/1/79 Released on bail. Even though Malcolm McLaren had grudgingly agreed to pay the money, he was busy with his own legal problems in England with Johnny Rotten, and could not attend the New York hearing. On February 1, 1979 Sid Vicious walked out of Rikers Island and died later that night of a heroin overdose.
