The tool vase is carved and pierced in openwork depicting a scholar seated in a tranquil landscape under a hanging cliff and pine trees. The cliff face is incised with the signature Sansong.

Lot Essay

Sansong is the pseudonym of Zhu Zhizheng, a renowned bamboo carver from the Jiading area active during the late Ming period. His grandfather Zhu He, and father Zhu Ying, were also revered masters and established the Jiading School of bamboo carving. Zhu Zhizheng was particularly known for his relief and deep carving of figures and scholar settings.
