Lot Essay

Jennens and Bettridge are most noted for their work in papier mache and it is less usual to see examples of their work on glass; however, they were an adventurous firm, keen to experiment with different types of painted decoration. For example, in 1847 it was they who patented the new type of inlaid decoration with coloured glass, tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl and ivory.
