SUNDIALS. ‘Reloxes’, manuscript treatise, Convento de San Francisco, Marbella, 5 November 1610. Title page, facing a sonnet on astrology, opening a treatise on the use and manufacture of sundials ‘orizontales y verticales’, with many illustrative diagrams, 12 of these full-page. In Spanish, 109 pages, 205 x 150mm, (some water-staining, chiefly to the outer margin, scattered ink acidification of the text). Contemporary vellum (darkened, lacking ties). Card chemise and slipcase.
The anonymous friar who likely authored this illustrated handbook on gnomonics offers the reader a thorough treatment of both horizontal and vertical sundials, their fabrication, and use according to the compass point in which they face, with explanations for the use of gnomic triangles, and for the zodiac signs in drawing declination arcs. Instructive ink diagrams illustrate the text: among the most attractive are the designs for the construction of different types of dial.
