BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso (1608-1679). De motionibus naturalibus. Reggio Calabria: Domenico Ferri, 1670.

4° (228 x 154mm). Half-title, woodcut device on title, woodcut diagrams in text. (A few minor stains, some light finger soiling, occasional small marginal tears.) 18th-century mottled calf, spine gilt (small wormholes in spine, foot of spine lightly rubbed).

FIRST EDITION of Borelli’s important treatise on the nature of liquids, in which Borelli 'argues against positive levity, discusses the Torricellian experiment, takes up siphons, pumps, and the nature of fluidity, tries to understand the expansion of water while freezing, and deals with fermentation and other chemical processes' (DSB II, p.311). Like his De vi percussionis (1667), this publication is an important introduction to his greatest work De motu animalium (1679). Riccardi I(i) 159.
