4 volumes, 4° (195 x 158mm). 4 engraved frontispieces, first title in red and black, 33 folding engraved plates, numerous engraved plates and illustrations in the text. (Some heavy browning and spotting, tears to two folding plates.) Contemporary vellum, manuscript titles to spine (bowed). Provenance: Renzo Pagliari (bookplate).
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION IN LATIN of the works of one of the earliest microbiologists. ‘[Leeuwenhoek’s] most important contributions were made in the fields of microbiology, sexual reproduction, hematology and plant anatomy. He was the first to recognize the true nature of micro organisms, and gave the first descriptions of bacteria’ (Norman). Published unsystematically from 1684, it was not until 1718 that Leeuwenhoek brought out a collected edition of his letters in Dutch, followed in 1722 by a Latin edition (DSB VIII, p.129). This set contains the 1730 edition of ‘Continuatio epistolarum’ in volume I. Norman, 1301; Wellcome III, 477.
