Small 4° (192 x 138mm). Large woodcut device on title, folding engraved portrait by Michael del Sobleo after J. Georg, ornamental initials. (Occasional light marginal waterstaining, stronger and affecting text of last two leaves.) Contemporary vellum, lettering-piece (lacking ties). Provenance: ‘Collegi[um] Soc[ietatis] jesu Forolinis’ (inscription on title) -- paper shelf marks (on spine).
FIRST EDITION of this point by point response to Galileo’s letter regarding Liceti’s Lithospheres. The author's reputation as an anti-Galilean was so great that a lunar impact crater was named after him. Carli and Favaro 187; Riccardi I(ii) 40.10.
