2 parts in one volume, 4° (238 x 175mm). Woodcut device on title, numerous woodcut geometric and astronomical diagrams, woodcut initials, tailpiece, with the ‘Appendix’ on stars and comets bound at the end. (Occasional minor soiling, title possibly supplied from another copy, small loss to margin of Kkk1 and corner of Rrr4.) Contemporary calf, gilt spine. (Rebacked with original spine laid down, corners repaired, lightly scuffed). Provenance: École Saint-Geneviéve (library stamp) – Dom. S. Aloys. Jerseiens, S.J (ink stamp) – [?] J.M. Madrolle (inscriptions to front pastedown and title).
FIRST EDITION of this voluminous astronomical work by the sole disciple of Tycho Brahe. The first of the two parts is a study of spheres and circles; the second, a comparison between the systems proposed by Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Brahe. ‘Regarded as the testament of Tycho, the work was eagerly received and quickly won a place in 17th century astronomical literature’ (DSB XII, p.332). Houzeau and Lancaster 2926.
