MANZINI, Carlo Antonio (1599-1677). L'occhiale all'occhio. Dioptrica pratica. Bologna: Heirs of Benacci, 1660.
4º (204 x 145mm). Engraved portrait by G. Testana after P. Schor, woodcut title vignette and illustrations. (Title and following leaf with small marginal stain.) Contemporary vellum, spine with manuscript labels (tears in spine, front free endpaper removed).
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this important early work on practical optics and lens making, dedicated to St Lucy, patron saint of the blind. A member of the Bolognese nobility and amateur of astronomy, Manzini made improvements to a lathe for polishing and grinding, and was in close personal contact with the two principal makers of telescopes in Italy, Francesco Fontana (1580-1656) and Eustachio Divini (1620-1695). A portrait of Divini is included in his book which forms a complete practical manual for the artisan in the construction of both microscopes and telescopes (see Riccardo Bellé, ‘L’occhiale all’occhio. Un testo del XVII secolo sulla costruzione dei telescopi’ in Atti de la Fondazione Giorgio Ronchi, Florence, LXIV, May-June 2009, no. 3, p.453). BL/STC 17th-century Italian Books II, p.530; NLM/Krivatsy 7389; Riccardi I(ii) 96.4; Wellcome IV, p.48.
