MESSAHALA MA-SHA ALLAH AL-MIERI (770-820). De elementis et orbibus coelestibus. Nuremberg: Joannes Montanus & Ulrich Neuber, 1549.

Small 4° (203 x 148mm). (One or two leaves with light marginal waterstain, lightly spotted.) 17th-century vellum (new endpapers).

Second enlarged edition of this work discussing the elements and the celestial orbs, first published in 1504. Messahala was a Persian Jew from the city of Basra who became the leading astrologer of the late eighth century. De elementis et orbibus coelestibus provides a comprehensive account of the whole cosmos along Aristotelian lines. In it, Mesahala covers many topics that were important in early cosmology and strays away from traditional cosmology by postulating a ten-orb universe. The work was aimed at laymen and includes diagrams with text to facilitate comprehension of his main ideas. The second edition of this ‘important Latin translation by Gerard of Cremona of the lost Arabic original of this exposition’ (DSB) was edited by Joachim Heller of Weissenfels. BL/STC German Books 599; Graesse IV, 503; Houzeau and Lancaster 1121: 'Très rare.'
