Details
MICALORI, Giacomo (1570-1645). Della sfera mondiale … libri quattro. Urbino: Antonio Mazzantini, 1626.

4º (199 x 142mm). Title in red and black with woodcut of an armillary sphere, woodcut illustrations. (Ink stains affecting title, generally light spots and stains elsewhere, denser spotting to quire K.) Contemporary vellum (crinkled).

Micalori’s astronomical handbook seems intended for the layman since, as Cinti notes, the author gives no geometrical or mathematical demonstrations, and his concepts are strongly rooted in Aristotelianism. A slightly begrudging reference to the 'nouamente ritrouato occhiale, o cannone, che chiamono teloscopio’ occurs on p.13. Micalori was a canon of Urbino, and Riccardi noted the citation of two earlier editions dated 1624 and 1625 in the publication Degli uomini illustri di Urbino. However, this is the first (and only) edition in SBN, and identified as the first by Parenti. Cinti 78; Honeyman 2228; Parenti 223; Riccardi I(ii) 155; Vinciana, Aut. Ital. del '600 1583.
