MONTE, Guidobaldo del (1545-1607). In duos Archimedis aequeponderantium Libros paraphrasis. Pesaro: Girolamo Concordia, 1588.

2° (315 x 210mm). Woodcut vignette on title, woodcut diagrams. (A few spots.) Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title on spine (lacking ties). Provenance: Andrea Spinula (inscription at foot of title) – Giuseppe Renato Imperiali (1651-1737; stamp at foot of title).

FIRST EDITION of Guidobaldo del Monte’s commentary on Archimedes' work on the equilibrium of planes, containing his own important and influential treatise on the determination of centres of gravity. Giuseppe Renato Imperiali, this book's early owner, was made a cardinal by Alexander VIII in 1690. Although the library, the nucleus of which was inherited from his grand uncle Cardinal Lorenzo Imperiali, has long been dispersed, it is remembered because of the catalogue compiled in 1711 by the librarian Giusto Fontanini (1666-1736). Adams U-6 (listed under Ubaldinus); Riccardi I(ii), 179.5.
