2 parts, 2° (341 x 225mm). Half-title, additional engraved title, 50 engraved plates, one double-page, woodcut head- and tailpieces, initials. (Very lightly browned throughout.) 18th-century sprinkled calf gilt (extremities rubbed, head and tail of spine chipped). Provenance: M[aria] L[udovica] Borromeo Arese and M[assimiliano] Favia del Core (bookplate) – illegible library stamp (on half-title and printed title).

First published in 1638, this is the third edition, edited by Roberval, but the first to contain Mersenne’s important optical treatise, L’optique et la catoptrique. This is Niceron’s major work on perspective and geometrical optics. His Persepective curieuse (1638) defines the range and nature of the problems he addressed; later editions of the work simply provide more detail’ (DSB).
